Busy Month for Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute

October is National Seafood Month, and it’s been a very busy one for the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, from the inaugural flight of Alaska Airlines’ new “Salmon-30-Salmon” passenger jet on Oct. 4 to a marketing forum in Japan with the Nikkei Marketing Journal at mid-month. The plane, painted to look like a gigantic wild salmon, is a flying billboard for Alaska’s wild salmon. It is a joint effort of the air carrier and ASMI. ASMI Foodservice was the premier sponsor in early October at the Chef’s Collaborative Sustainable Food Summit in Seattle that attracts chefs, writers and food industry professional to learn and speak on sustainable food issues. Speakers included Denby Lloyd of Alaska Resource Consultancy, speaking about the five species of wild Alaska salmon. Then with the Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association, ASMI hosted a summit reception featuring several species of wild Alaska seafood.

ASMI was also represented Oct. 3 at the annual conference of the Alaska State Chamber of Commerce in Anchorage, with a presentation by Tyson Fick on the Alaska seafood industry, and sponsored a catered lunch of halibut and snow crab at Bethel for some 300 attendees and delegates from Yukon/Kuskokwim region villages to the Association of Village Council Presidents meeting, at the board meeting of United Fishermen of Alaska in Anchorage this past week, Fick updated UFA on activities of the ASMI public relations program. ASMI had a booth at the Alaska Federation of Natives annual meeting in Anchorage, fully stocked with recipes, cookbooks, ASMI apparel and more.

On the European front, ASMI exhibited at the 14th international Frozen Seafood Products Exhibition, CONXEMAR 2012, at Vigo, Spain, and in Japan, ASMI participated in a marketing forum in connection with Nikkei Marketing Journal, Japan’s only marketing journal offering coverage of the consumer goods industry and retail marketing trends.
